What I’ve learned about history, and it ain’t pretty!

I’ve taken to listening to podcasts on my commutes when I don’t have a good book to listen to.

I was doing the true crime thing for a minute but the cases are rarely solved and that’s kind of depressing. I decided to go a different direction, in podcasts. I like books on history these days. American History, WWI and WWII, this far. I’ve gotten started on this podcast, History that doesn’t Suck, and I’m really enjoying it! I wish some of my history teachers had been this engaging in their teachings! For real!

Having listened to the book, Lincoln, and there was Light, by Jon Meacham, I’ve come to the stark realization that humans can be smart, soooo smart, the smartest of all bipeds, and yet still we humans, persist (sic), in being just dumb. Politics were just as twisted up in the newborn USA, as it is in the now two century old republic. It’s sad! We should be doing better.

We don’t learn from our previous mistakes. History shows that we just do the same dumb things, over and over. Heaven help us, I don’t know how the human race manages to survive.

Anyhow, this podcast is an engaging listen.

Sometime prior to 1837, German philosopher, Georg Hegel did a series of lectures. A significant quote from those lectures, I pasted below. We’re doomed as humans. 🙄

I’ve become somewhat of a history buff. I’m enjoying learning some world history as I get older. I wish it had been more engaging when I was younger, it here we are. I believe in learning history, and about current events, not tainted by opinion. I just want the facts, not the opinion of the historian or the newscaster.

All we want are the facts, ma’am!
